After completing my project and analyzing the results, I have concluded that my hypothesis was partially correct. I hypothesized that the seeds that were microwaved for a short amount of time would germinate the fastest. This hypothesis proved to be true in the case of the tomato seeds. The tomato seeds that were microwaved for 15 and 30 seconds proved to be the ones that germinated the fastest, and grew the tallest overall. On the first day of germination, the tomato seeds generally grew to about 1½ to 2 centimeters, and generally grew to a total height of about 5 cm. This did not prove true with the radish and sunflower seeds though. The radish and sunflower seeds that weren’t microwaved at all, and those that were microwaved for 45 seconds, seemed in most cases to sprout the earliest, and to grow the tallest overall. The sunflower and radish seeds had a tendency to sprout early, and grow very tall at an extremely fast pace, growing up to 4 cm in one day! Yes, microwaving seeds before planting them does effect the germination rate of the seeds, but how long to microwave the seeds varies between different seed types. Every different type of seed requires a different amount of radiation exposure from a microwave in order to get the best results, and the earliest germinating seeds.

A Science Fair Project
Microwaving seeds to see if it affects their germination or growth.
An abstract of sorts:
I exposed sunflower, radish, and tomato seeds to different amounts of radiation from a microwave to see how it affects the germination rate of the seeds. I expected the seeds that were microwaved for short amounts of time to germinate earlier than seeds that were either microwaved for a longer amount of time, or seeds that weren’t microwaved at all. I then planted the seeds; unmicrowaved seeds, and seeds that were microwaved on half power for 15, 30, and 45 seconds. I did so for each type of seed, and for each seed type, I performed three trials to ensure accurate results. I watered the plants every day, and as soon as the first plant sprouted, I recorded the day and height of the plant. I did so for each subsequent plant, until all of the plants had sprouted. Next, I compared the germination rates for the different seeds that were exposed to different amounts of radiation from the microwave. This showed how my hypothesis was partially correct. I found out that the amount of radiation from a microwave needed to make seeds germinate the fastest depends on the type of seed it is. For the tomato seeds, the seeds that seemed to germinate the fastest were those that had been microwaved for either 15 or 30 seconds. The sunflower seeds that weren’t microwaved and those that had been microwaved for 45 seconds germinated the fastest. The radish seeds that were microwaved for 45 seconds germinated the fastest.
