Sentences - Words

Theme- The main theme of the address was for the nation to bind up its wounds and to accept the outcome of the war, while moving on with life and prosperity.

Repetition- It will become necessary soon enough to become a better person in the world.

Counterpoints- The black exhaust coming from the truck’s inside was turning the bright white snow a dirty color.

Imagery- The flowers dangled from the roof of the devil’s silhouette.

Metaphor- That painting of me taking the bull by the horns is how I like to handle my business, except that that really happened.

Characterization- The girl’s bright blue eyes were as attractive as the sky on a beautiful, clear day.

Plot Development- After chasing the tiger through the forest, Jack began to give up on such a seemingly impossible task.

Introduction and conclusion- Jack’s friend, John, was a multi-billion dollar corporation owner who ran his famed logging industry, based in the deepest jungles of the Amazon.

Narrator- Upon completing his eagle project, Jeff began to start the planning process for his eagle board.

Style, tone, voice- And this is why it is absolutely necessary that this state take an anti-death penalty stance.

Analogy- We have to educate the indigenous peoples of the world, like shedding light on the Amish without actually giving them electricity.

Flashback- He was headed toward the swimming pool that day, just as he had a thousand times before, on all those days when he felt fat.

Foreshadowing- It was a great feeling for Jack to have read the words ‘I love you’ on the card from Sue; he wanted to find her right then and give her I gigantic hug.

Hyperbole-She looked like she’d been through hell after that training course.

Personification- The flowers danced as though the sun would never rise again.

Allusion- It became clear that Hitler had become a leader, and not a follower, similar to Jesus and his own disciples.

Irony- The girl wished only to be ‘seeing the boy,’ but not actually ‘dating him.’

Oxymoron- She broke my heart with that solid steel sword of hers.

Paradox- The work of Picasso is so mind-bendingly beautiful, while at the same time it can be viewed as a mere collage of garbage.

Symbolism- The heart shape he made in the sand on that scorching summer day lasted the entire summer as he and Sue began their life-long relationship.

Parody- Early immigrants in American history looked at such rags-to-riches successes as John D. Rockefeller and considered such an achievement a definite possibility for themselves.

Sarcasm- You’re about as useful as a watch without a battery.

Satire- It’s unclear why you didn’t just take the old lady’s groceries, when she handed the large bags to you to help her carry them.

Correcting Errors

A comma is needed sometimes after using certain introductory words or phrases. Ex. On the other hand there were no more carrots left either. On the other hand, there were no more carrots left either.

More clarification is needed when he, she, it, etc. is used. Ex. Airport taxiways are often filled with airplanes, causing traffic jams on them. Airport taxiways are often filled with airplanes, causing traffic jams on the taxiways.

A comma is missing from a sentence linked by words such as ‘and’. Ex. He was a very big man and he had large feet too. He was a very big man, and he had large feet too.
A wrong word is used. Ex. With this new invention, I’ll become infamous! With this new invention, I’ll become famous!

A comma is missing a part of the sentence that isn’t necessary. Ex. I was forced to walk home after tennis practice when it began to rain. I was forced to walk home after tennis practice, when it began to rain.

The wrong tense is illustrated, caused by a wrong or missing verb ending. Ex. I had to go there in one hour. I have to go there in one hour.
Something is referred to with the wrong preposition. Ex. I found him on the diner, after which I brought him home on the car. I found him in the diner, after which I brought him home in the car.
A comma is missing that links two halves of sentences together. Ex. He was upset about the grade he received a B-. He was upset about the grade, he received a B-.

The apostrophe that shows possession is either in the wrong place, or doesn’t exist at all. Ex. The dogs name was Mickey McGregor Silvercloud. The dog’s name was Mickey McGregor Silvercloud.
A shift in the tense is unnecessary in this situation. Ex. John giggles until he fell out of his chair. John giggles until he falls out of his chair.

When the pronoun changes, not matching the other, later in the sentence. Ex. By my having come here, it has been consoling to one’s heart. By my having come here, it has been consoling to my heart.

The proposed sentence is a fragment. Ex. Tore up the garage. The car crash tore up the garage.
The sentence’s tense/verb form doesn’t agree with the rest of the sentence. Ex. The dog be sniffing at the bush. The dog was sniffing at the bush.

The verb must agree with the subject in the sentence. Ex. Some of the most exciting times of my life has been on a boat. Some of the most exciting times of my life have been on a boat.

A comma is needed after each item in a list of 3 or more items. Ex. A simple salad consists of lettuce, tomatoes and cucumbers. A simple salad consists of lettuce, tomatoes, and cucumbers.
The pronoun and antecedent do not agree. Ex. Both of the children adapted well in their new environment. Both of the children adapted well in its new environment.

A clause that is essential, doesn’t always require commas. Ex. He wanted to read, by checking out a book, at the local library. He wanted to read by checking out a book at the local library.
Two sentences are fused in one. Ex. I love to watch tennis matches I love to play tennis too. I love to watch tennis matches. I love to play tennis too.

The modifier is in the wrong place, or dangling, causing the meaning of the sentence to become confusing. Ex. It was possible to record the tennis match with a camcorder. With a camcorder, it was possible to record the tennis match.

It’s is only to be used to mean ‘it is’, or ‘it has’. Its is meant for belonging to. Ex. Its only a game. It’s only a game.

Compound-Complex Sentences

1. Because Mitchell forgot his soccer shorts at home, he had to go back and get them,wasting valuable practice time.

2. Leanne dreamed of getting a five on her AP Language exam, but woke up soon thereafter and realized that none of what had happened was in fact real.

3. When Paul received his driver's license, the DMV forgot to stamp on it that he wasa minor, thereby allowing him to drive off-base legally.

4. Sandy left her house early in the morning, which allowed her to beat the morningrush of vehicles off in the same direction she was.

5. Writing compound-complex sentences often involves a great deal of thinking, so it is often very time consuming for some people that don't like to think very hard.

Vocabulary Sentences

I sometimes show a great antipathy for arrogant people.
The aquiline fishing hook effectively caught its prey.
Her beautiful countenance inspired me to work harder towards achieving my dreams.
