The Davenport Model for corporate citizenship outlines many facets that a responsible company should have covered, with regards to the treatment and benefits of employees. The most notable of these areas includes providing a family-friendly work environment, investing in employee development, engaging in open communication with employees, providing an equitable reward and wage system for employees, and engaging in responsible human-resource management. Anheuser-Busch does its best to encompass each of these areas in employee sustainability through continued research, experimentation, and implementation of new, employee-friendly pilot programs that serve to improve the quality of life of Anheuser-Busch employees.
One area that Anheuser-Busch has been particularly quick to modernize its policies in is gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) rights. According to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation, Anheuser-Busch “has written non-discrimination policies covering sexual orientation and gender identity in its employee handbook or manual, and offers health insurance coverage to [these] employees’ domestic partners” (www.hrc.org). In addition to enforcing these policies, all employees are also required to attend diversity training, and some are required to attend further training in the areas of sexual orientation and gender identity and expression.
Not only is Anheuser-Busch an equal opportunity employer, but it strives to provide the best workplace possible for its employees. The Calvert investments group points out that “in 2003, the company established an employee safety-and-wellness program that emphasizes the importance of nutrition, seat belt use, exercise, and other aspects of good health” (www.calvert.com). In this way, the company promotes health and safety that allows its employees and their families to lead better lives. Likewise, Calvert emphasizes that “Anheuser-Busch performs regular safety audits to identify risks before incidents occur.” Hence, the company strives to protect its employees from unnecessary and avoidable risk.
Roughly 15% of the Anheuser-Busch board of directors is women, and the company uses employee retention and incentive programs to help maintain a consistent and efficient work force.
