Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
I believe that the proliferation of nuclear weapons will be the single most influential event to take place in my generation. Third world and developing countries will soon have the ability to maintain nuclear arsenals. This is because radical fundamentalists and terrorists are gaining access to these materials, and are more than willing to supply these nations with these resources. Where the United States finds its true dilemma is easily seen. Maintaining its nuclear arsenal for over half a century, the United States is a stable society without malice intentions toward the rest of the civilized world. The same, however, cannot be said for all the nations currently attempting to acquire nuclear weapons. In a time when securing peace in the Middle East is crucial, it cannot be guaranteed that Iran having nuclear capabilities is the best idea. This is where the real issue at hand comes in: How is it possible to maintain world peace without infringing upon any nations’ sovereign rights to bear nuclear arms? This question is what will shape the controversy this topic is guaranteed to produce over the next lifetime.
