Graduation Speech

Congratulations, Class of 2006. 12 years ago we embarked on a journey, that, although we didn’t know then, would include many challenges, hardships, and successes. We have had too many teachers to count, for some of us too many schools to count, and for all of us, way too many late nights doing homework, to count. And through it all, what have we learned? Well, science, math, and English, for sure, but for those of us that sit here today, we’ve learned that being successful requires hard work and good decision making.

Patience, also, is sometimes the key to making all our dreams come true. Reaching this point however, has been, by no means, an individual effort. There are so many people to thank for helping us to reach this point, so make sure that before you move on from this stage of your life, that each one of them knows just how appreciative you really are of their time and effort. Say to each one, “thank you for making a difference in my life.” If your family hadn’t pushed you, you wouldn’t be here. If your teachers hadn’t pushed you, you would not be here. If you hadn’t pushed yourself, you certainly would not be here. Do not forget the many sacrifices that so many people have made for you. Also, don’t forget this place. Most people only dream of visiting Japan. You have lived in Japan. No one can ever take that away from you. As we graduates sit here and look at those next to us, we know that this is probably the last time that we’ll all be together in one place.

There are no more senior skip days, no more SAT dates to remember, and no more exams to take. While we relate these instances to high school, we must also face a reality that is knocking at our door: life. Every one of the people that you will say thank you to, has in some way better prepared you for life. My challenge to you, ZHS Class of ’06, is to use your life to make a difference to someone else. Give back, what others gave to you. Do not live simply for the purpose of existing. Do not become a statistic. Have a purpose in life, and achieve your goals. And I expect, that when someone says “you can’t do it,” that you’ll only work 10 times harder. If you stay focused and determined, you can’t help but find success. Thank you.
